WHAT IS THE WANDERING PAVILION?
The Wandering Pavilion is a temporary structure composed of a kit of parts: floor, wall and roof. (Four pieces of each) The Pavilion “wanders” from neighbourhood to neighbourhood in St. John’s throughout the summer. Its function changes in each location. For examples of potential uses see here (link to: homepage).
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
The Wandering has two main goals:
- Promote an appreciation and understanding of architecture and urban design.
- Give a platform for people to test their ideas about how to make our city better and build community.
DOES THE WANDERING PAVILION MAKE MONEY?
No, we are doing this because we care about St. John’s and want to make waves. The Wandering Pavilion will pay for itself using sponsorship, grants and rental income. The money that comes in will cover fabrication, publicity, transportation and required services like insurance or engineering.
DOES IT HAVE POWER AND WATER?
While it’s still under design, the current plan is for the pavilion to have limited power and no water. Depending on where the pavilion is set up, it may have access to adjacent resources.
WHO SETS IT UP AND RUNS IT?
We’ll have a couple of staff member and a series of volunteers who will set up and tear down the pavilion. In each different location, we will have one or more community partners who will operate the pavilion. The community partners’ responsibilities vary from checking in on the pavilion once a day to having someone in the pavilion for a longer period of time.
WHERE WILL IT WANDER TO AND WHAT WILL IT BE?
The function and locations of the pavilion has been determined by public consultation, and can be found here. We have used a variety of methods including in person and online engagement to determine what the pavilion will be. We’re now working with artists, community groups and all levels of government to fine tune the details.
CAN I RENT THE WANDERING PAVILION?
While the primary purpose of the Wandering Pavilion is for public use and to build community, we recognize that sometimes business can fill this role too. Sometimes all a neighbourhood needs is an extra coffee shop. We are open to a variety of functions if they are a fit in our schedule, please contact us.
HOW CAN I BE INVOLVED?
We need volunteers to keep this project running. If you are interested in helping us the set the pavilion up, document it’s journey or help facilitate some engagement, we could use your help. If you’d like to get involved, click here. If you’d just like to stay in the loop you can follow us on facebook or twitter.
IS IT INSURED?
The Wandering Pavilion will be insured. Both the pavilion itself and the person occupying the pavilion need to have insurance. We can help you navigate and potentially fund the process, because we don’t want this to be a barrier to giving each neighbourhood what the community wants.
WHAT HAPPENS AT NIGHT TIME?
Idealistically, we think that as a project truly built from community, that the community will care for it and it won’t be vandalized. However, we acknowledge that this may not be the case. We’ll have a team that is maintaining the pavilion throughout its journey. We are also investigating the potential of closing down the pavilion at night time in certain locations.
